SA-36 Temperature / Yield

SA-36 Temperature / Yield

SA-36 Temperature / Yield

I am trying to locate (thus far unsuccessfully) data that states that A-36 material is good for up to 1300 degrees. This is not in a pressure environment; it is for an exhaust vent. So far everything that I've come across says that it is only good for 750 - 850 F before creep kicks in. If that is the case, then what would the yield be at 1300F?

Thanks in advance.

RE: SA-36 Temperature / Yield

I wouldn't use this steel for applications that are subject to prolong temperature above 800F, because this produces graphitazation - pearlite will slowly transform to graphite rendering steel brittle.

RE: SA-36 Temperature / Yield

Graphitization damage is a risk, not a given,  in comparison to creep deformation and severe oxidation.

Thanks all. Is there a material recommended which can withstand that kind of temperature?

RE: SA-36 Temperature / Yield

Yes, you can use a ferritic stainless steel - Type 439 -  is common for exhaust ductwork on gas turbines.

Thanks again metengr. You were a big help.
