Composite Secant Files

Composite Secant Files

(OP)
I have a 3'10" diamater secant pile with a W27x84 soldier pile spaced everyother pile (6.25'). The compressive strength of the concrete is 4 ksi.How can I determine the composite bending capacity of the the secant pile? I am currently exceeding the bending moment of the wide flange and need to start taking into account the strenght of the concrete.

RE: Composite Secant Files

Unless you have shear connectors between the steel beam and the concrete (headed anchor studs for example) you can't assume composite action.

In my experience the contractor always prefers a heavier beam with no shear connectors to a lighter beam with the connectors.  You can easily fit a larger beam in that large a shaft.

If you need to use that size beam, the AISC manual goes through the steps of composite beam design.
