I was wondering if anyone knew how to modify the color of part body in NX 7 so that I could then extrude cut into it and have a different color when I do that. I know I can go in afterwards and change the colors, but when I used other platforms I know that it would change as I cut into it(WF4).

RE: Coloring the inside of a casting to see machining modifications

Hi,

What I have done before with machined casting models is to Edit->Object Display->Type Filter->Face select the faces you want to mark and choose a different colour to the existing model, any machining operations through the re-coloured faces will then show up the underlying colour of the original model. Hope this helps.

Here is how to do it in NX6:
Edit (pull down) -> Object display -> type filter -> click face (so only face is highlighted) -> OK -> select face(s) -> OK -> click on color and pick the color that you want -> Ok -> OK

Awesome, thanks.

RE: Coloring the inside of a casting to see machining modifications

After creating your base body (that which will be machined), go to...

Preferences -> Objects...

...and set a new and different 'default color' for a Solid Body.

Now go to...

Preferences -> Modeling...

...and change the 'Boolean Face Properties from' option from 'Target Body' to 'Tool Body'.

Now create your extruded solid(s) which represents the material to be removed and then subtract this body from the original base solid using the explicit Boolean Subtract operation (NOT as an option during the creation of the Extruded solid body, but as a separate explicit operation).

John,
I am looking forward to seeing you at the Chicago/Wisconsin Regional User Group Conference tomorrow.
Sorry you had to come to such crummy weather.

RE: Coloring the inside of a casting to see machining modifications

Hey, I'm originally from the Mid-West (Northern Michigan) so it's not like "crummy weather" is something I've never experienced before winky smile

John,
You missed a really nice Fall this year, especially in the UP. The colors were great and they lasted a long time.

RE: Coloring the inside of a casting to see machining modifications

A month ago (Oct 12-13) I drove from Rochester, NY, to Minneapolis via Mackinaw and US-2 along Northern Lake Michigan and across Wisconsin so I didn't "miss" the Fall colors.
