Welding compatability

Welding compatability

Welding compatability

(OP)
Just wondering if anyone can help me out? I have a torque tube that has been cracked and weld repairs carried out using 232 gas-less welding wire, I have to weld the spherical bearing to the torque tube with FCAW E71T1 wire as per welding procedure. Just curious to know if welding over the top of the 232 gas-less wire will be a problem? For my mind it's not the done thing welding over 232 with flux core is not compatible. Would appreciate your input if anyone knows.

RE: Welding compatability

Would you like clarify the metallurgy of the materials involved and geometry for those less familar with those exact terms?

RE: Welding compatability

ditto cloa's comment

As a rule I don't let friends use gasless (self-shielded) FCAW wires.

RE: Welding compatability

Lincoln's 232 is classified E71T-8 and has toughness at -20 F. E71T-8 is the only self shielded wire that we permit and we only use it for duct work. We have welded over it with E71T-1. As per brimstoner, I would not have used Lincoln's 232 welding filler for the repair.

RE: Welding compatability

I would perform a Liquid Penetrant examination prior to welding to ensure no problems with the previous weld repair. If acceptable, weld according to the proper procedure using E71T-1.
