welder operator by API 1104

welder operator by API 1104

Hello,
to qualify welder operator on pipe using GMAW+FCAW processes(semiaut+autom), it is enought with radiography test?

thanks

RE: welder operator by API 1104

API 1104 is silent with respect to welder qualification (See Sections 6 and 12.6).  Although it may provide guidance for destructive and non-destructive testing, the prevailing code will determine if qualification via radiography is acceptable.

For example, qualification via radiography alone for compliance to 49CFR Part 192.229 (gas service) is acceptable for pipeline work, but is specifically prohibited for compression facility.

When in doubt, destructively test...you can't possibly go wrong this way...

Having said all that, and you didn't ask this question, procedure qualification is always performed with destructive testing.  Additionally, if the application falls under API 1104 Section 12 -Mechanized Welding with Filler Metal Additions, both destrictive eand NDE is required.

thanks to reply me, but still it is not clear to me.:

It means that additinal operators (no the operator that already qualify WPS)are qualified just by radiography testing?
Reading 12.6 is is clear that to qualify operator "it is necesary destructive test, non destructive test, or both" so it means that radiography test is enough.

But, is it API 1104 the only code that allow short-circuit transfer qualification without bend-test?

thanks in advance

Your reply is unclear.

Destructively test the welders.  It's easier in the long run....trust me...

By 12.6 "The completed weld shall be tested by destructive methods, non destructive methods, or both" and shall met the requeriments of 6.4 thought 6.7" Therefore, RT testing is enough applying 6.6 though short-circuit transfer mode is used.

RE: welder operator by API 1104

No cognizant Inspector will accept welder qual's utilizing Short-Circuiting GMAW based on RT only.  RT will not/cannot find the Lack-or-Fusion defects typical of GMAW-SS.

Yes, 1104 appears to allow it.  But nobody competent will accept it.  Period.  1104 is a very strange code, and written for cross-country piping welded SMAW with E6010 downhill.

If you will look, API-650 [tanks], 510 [vessels & boilers], and 570 [in-unit piping] all use ASME Sect IX for Procedures and Welder Qual's.  There's a reason these all avoid the 1104 testing program.

Yes, i am agree with you, to qualified operator using GMAW shor-circuit process must be by destructive testing and RT. As I already comment, UNE-EN and ASME require it, but API is not.

The main trouble to destructive testing is the price impact, as usually.

thanks to all

grrr, wrong button, hit submit instead of preview... using a proxy server as eng-tips is blocked on my work laptop.

Just wanted to offer a different opinion to Duwe6 last comment:
API 1104 is for pipelines and ASME B31.4/31.8 for pipelines refer to 1104 for welder quals. So I wouldn't consider it such a strange code.

you are right bernoulliest123, my question is refering to oil pipeline welding according to API1104 code.
