Flexible Moment Connections - Advantage?
Flexible Moment Connections - Advantage?
(OP)
Is there any advantage or reason to use flexible moment connections (previously 'type 2 wind) as defined by AISC? Is the idea to save on connection material at the expense of heavier beams?

RE: Flexible Moment Connections - Advantage?
Be careful with FMCs as laid out in my initial post in that thread. To directly answer the question assuming a correct PR analysis is run, the advantages are a more distributed lateral resisting system with little extra connection costs at the expense of a good deal of extra engineering effort, which generally is neither appreciated nor paid for.
