Need Help! - Antiterrorism Design for Military Facility

Need Help! - Antiterrorism Design for Military Facility

(OP)
I will be very vague as I'm sure they're listening... (joking) I am currently working on an military installation and we are adding some ventilation openings in existing masonry walls (that are NOT designed for blast resistance) however, the design team has been reinforced several times by the Army Core that we need to make sure our design meets the criteria of UFC 4-010-01 standard for Antiterrorism.

What I cannot conclude from reviewing this document is other than a minimum height requirement of 10' AFF is what else I need to do. I feel as though their may be some requirements as far as the connection of the mechanical equipment in the opening to the masonry walls but I am at a loss. Could any chime in and maybe help provide some direction as to what UFC document or other DoD standard might pertain to this issue or how maybe provide some direction as to the design I would need to include (i.e. blast loading). Thanks.

RE: Need Help! - Antiterrorism Design for Military Facility

If the standoff distance is adequate, use UFC 4-010-01 Minimum Anti-terrorism Standards for Buildings.  That will answer all the questions you are asking.  If you are supporting a mechanical unit of a certain weight overhead, there are bracing requirements that must be met.

I had missed the requirements of horizontal bracing and the load factors for overhead equipment. Thanks. next questions.

Are these load factor's intended to be stacked on the DL factor for LRFD design per ASCE 7 (1.2)?

Also, these buildings do not meet the requirements of standoff distances, however we have been directed to reference UFC 4-010-01. Does this mean I brace the mechanical equipment as referenced or are my loads higher because the standoff distances are not met and if so, what document is that information in?

Thanks again.

If you don't meet the standoffs you may have to harden the building.
