Steel lintels for 10" CMU

Steel lintels for 10" CMU

Steel lintels for 10" CMU

(OP)
Does anyone have recommendations for a cost-effective design for steel loose lintels for 10" CMU?  I usually use back to back angles for 8" and 12" CMU sized to be back from the outside edges.  But 10" CMU (9 5/8") presents a different situation as only 4" and 5" leg angles are produced.  Is 8" of steelwidth below a 9 5/8" CMU sufficient?

RE: Steel lintels for 10" CMU

I use exterior angles with a steel plate welded to the bottom, to make up the gap, so the outside walls of the CMU are supported on the steel and the interior of the CMU is closed from leaking its innards by the plate below.  On larger openings and odd sizes, I use a wide flange beam directly below the CMU, flange width equal-ish to the CMU width, and skip a course of CMU.

Any thoughts about using unequal leg angles to avoid needing the plate?  for example an L5x3 1/2 and an L4x3 1/2 (LLH) to make 9" below the 10" CMU?

RE: Steel lintels for 10" CMU

That would perhaps create an unbalanced load-carrying situation, and perhaps more difficult to attach through the CMU.Best run the numbers on it.  Part of the use of the welded plate is to keep mortar, spiders, dust, insulation, etc from falling out of the CMU through the gap, so it's practical as well as structural.

What about a WT12 x ??
There's a bunch @ 9" wide, loading will be balanced, wide enough to keep the spiders out, etc.

I agree with slta about the bottom plate welded to the angles.

W8 + plate stitch welded to the bottom flange. Soap blocks between flanges. Plate only the width of the opening.

W8 will be better unbraced, and easier for the fabricator to find.

For Steel Lintels in existing 240  masonry wall. Install angles toe to toe (weld tie plates to the flange and/or bolt through)

For Steel Lintels in new 240 masonry block walls install angles back to back and stitch weld
