Assigning planes to a part on SW 2011

Assigning planes to a part on SW 2011

(OP)
Hey everyone.  I have a part that I created based on a 3D sketch created from a faro arm.  There was no flat surfaces to begin my sketch based off.  The part I created though is now completed and has 3 perfect faces to assign front, top & right planes to.  I only really need to do this for layout on the drawing.  I thought I could assign a plane to a surface with the orientation window but it's not allowing me to.

Any help?

Thanks,
Khris

Insert>Reference Geometry> Plane

Now you will have some options.  One will be to offset from a surface.  Your offset will be zero.

I'm looking to actually assign the Front, top and right planes to the surfaces, not just create new surfaces to sketch on.  I actually figured out how to orient it correctly in the drawing by pure luck...  LOL  seems like half the time that's just how it goes for me!

RE: Assigning planes to a part on SW 2011

Defining planes is different than setting up views. Click on the face you want as the front view and select normal to that. Use the arrows keys to rotate it about where you want it. Press the space bar and redefine "front" as this view. Repeat as necessary to get the other views how you want them.

RE: Assigning planes to a part on SW 2011

The Origin and Reference Planes cannot be moved. They are fixed at the 0,0,0 point of the 3D space. The sketches or model geometry will have to be moved to suit.
