Procedure for processing aluminium 6101 to T64

Procedure for processing aluminium 6101 to T64

(OP)
Is anyone able to advise on the procedure for heat treating aluminium 6101 to T64 condition (the highest conductivity form) - which is overaged compared to T6. Unfortunately internet searches have failed.

I assume the solution treatment step is 525°C for 1 hours followed by water quench. I believe the aging step is in the region of 230°C for 8 hours - can anyone confirm?

That is an excellent reference for heat treatment and one that I refer to regularly. However, the aging procedure it quotes for 6101 is for T6. The other common conditions for 6101, ie T61, T63 and T64 are overage conditions that compromise on strength to achieve higher conductivity. Other references have given me the aging temps for T61 (226°C) and T63 (193°C), but I am lacking T64 this is a partial anneal and gives max. electrical conductivity.

will,

You need ASTM B918 Standard Practice for Heat Treatment of Wrought Aluminum Alloys.  It defines the requirements for alloy 6101-T64 as follows:

solution heat treatment: 970 +/- 10 F
quench temperature: 110 F maximum
precipitation heat treatment: 535 +/- 10 F for 7 hours

TVP,

Thank you very much - I purchased the standard this morning; it is exactly what I need.
