General Fault Exception Error, graphics card?

General Fault Exception Error, graphics card?

General Fault Exception Error, graphics card?

(OP)
Hello

I recently installed NX 7.5 on my new laptop which has Windows 7 64 bit, a Intel 2920 CPU, and an Nvidia 580m graphics card. When I go to start up the program I receive and error message that says "General Fault Exception". I've talk with my CAD professor and he has never seen an error like this before, we've tried multiple solutions including, installing a different bit version as well as disabling my overclock that is on my GPU.My professor is under the impression that it's a problem with my GPU and that its too powerful (yeah right!). Also I've called Siemens and spoke with a support guy, he also said that it's probably a problem with my GPU; however, he agreed that my teachers assertion about my card was flawed and had me open up the Nvidia 3D settings, within there I messed with some settings to try to get it to work. But there was not a 3D modeling setting that the support guy claimed there would be. I've yet to get NX past the "General Fault Exception" error and was wondering if anyone knew what I can do to get this program running, and if it is in fact a problem with my 3D settings which I can fix?

Long story short, what Nvidia 3D settings should I change to this program running?

Thank you so much for time!!

RE: General Fault Exception Error, graphics card?

Did the support guy say that the GPU was certified? If so, are you running a certified driver?

I don't have the link off hand, but there is a page on the Siemens site that lists certified hardware/drivers.

Graphics card too powerful? No way.
Graphics card doesn't support OpenGL the way that NX needs? More likely.

I dont see anything on there list that would get me to seeing if its compatible. It a GeForce GTX 580M, and when I looked on Nvidia it said that it supported OpenGL

RE: General Fault Exception Error, graphics card?

If it is a GeForce, then it is probably not on the list. It looks to be almost exclusively Quadro cards from Nvidia on the list.

So basically i'm stuck in the mud, cause my graphics card isn't supported?

RE: General Fault Exception Error, graphics card?

I'm not sure that "General Fault Exception" automatically means your graphics card is to blame, we may be barking up the wrong tree here.

However, if your graphics card isn't on the official list, doesn't mean it won't work, only that you won't get much in the way of official support. Try different drivers, sometimes the older versions work better.

Do any of your peers have a similar system on which NX works?

Open the Nvidia control panel and select 'Manage 3D settings'. Is 'ugs nx' in the list of programs?

RE: General Fault Exception Error, graphics card?

I wouldn't work on the assumption that it's a graphics card. You spoke to GTAC, so did they ask for the NX log file? If not, then that's a big mistake because if the NX log file exists, it should be able to tell you what the cause is.
Try to start NX again. Then start up windows explorer, type in %TEMP% in the address bar then press enter and it will change to your temp folder. Sort by date and your NX log file shuld be there, the filename start with your username and end in .syslog.

Upload the log file here if you get one. If you do then the log should tell us what the cause is.

The other thing to try is to delete the following key from the windows registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Unigraphics Solutions\NX\7.5

I've seen it a number of times where NX won't start so deleting that key will get it going. In this case I don't think it's the cause but it's worth a try.

I've uploaded the log file, GTAC did ask if I had checked it, but I had not checked it.

To cowski: There is no one that I know of that has a similar system; however I've already installed the program on several other computers for my classmates who cant figure how to download it and apply the licenses. I've also checked the programs in the 3D settings when I first contacted GTAC and I had to add it to the list of programs.

Also this is still the other bit version of NX that I was told to try.

RE: General Fault Exception Error, graphics card?

Looking at the log file, it's not conclusive but it could be the graphics driver. Normally if the graphics card is crashing NX, there will be a crash and nvoglnt will appear at the crash. In this case it's referring to interop.

Are you installing the software as an administrator? Do you have UAC (User Account Control) turned off when doing so? I always advise our customers to turn off UAC as it can do very funny things when doing installs.

My recommendation is turn off UAC, then uninstall NX and install the 64bit version if you have it otherwise use the 32bit one. You can update NX7.5 to a later level, but if it doesn't start with the base install I wouldn't think that an update will help.

Also did you try the registry edit I suggested? It won't break anything, it just stores the NX preferences and is recreated when you start NX.

I'll try turning off UAC, and uninstalling and reinstalling the NX. I'm am the admin, but i can try installing with admin selected. I also tried to registry edit and got the same error.

I've turned off the UAC and I've installed the 64 bit version. Unfortunately I still have the same error

RE: General Fault Exception Error, graphics card?

Are you using the latest graphics driver?
The GeForce series of cards while they do support Open GL are not certified by Siemens for use with NX.

Yup, i have installed the latest graphics driver

RE: General Fault Exception Error, graphics card?

Since you've tried the latest driver, go the other way and uninstall all graphics drivers. Windows will use the generic VGA driver. The performance won't be great but at least you can identify if the driver is the problem.

RE: General Fault Exception Error, graphics card?

In my opinion it's not a graphics driver problem since you've tried the Windows VGA driver and the Nvidia one.
There's a conflict with something else on the system but the log file isn't giving any info.
Sorry I can't be of anymore help.

RE: General Fault Exception Error, graphics card?

Since you don't have a certified laptop, GTAC will not be able to assist you with a hardware problem.
Do you have any modified configuration files from a prior build on your machine? These can sometimes cause problems.

I got this computer brand, new, it was built by a company called Xoticpc. I choose my parts and they put it together for me, it's like how you build your Dell laptop on and they build it for you.

RE: General Fault Exception Error, graphics card?

Did this issue ever get resolved?  I am having the exact same error and GTAC is telling me it is a graphics issue, I'm not convinced though.

Thanks
Nate
