How does TC determine if Item ID has been used?

How does TC determine if Item ID has been used?

(OP)
Hi,

I would like to know if it is possible to edit the list of Item IDs that Teamcenter looks at when a new item is created.

The purpose is that my company has hundreds of part numbers that were used prior to implementing Teamcenter. We are looking for a way to restrict those part numbers from being used to create a new Item ID, similar to what happens if a user attempts to assign an ID that already corresponds to a part in Teamcenter.

I imagine we could manually create hundreds of 'dummy items' with those part numbers in our database, but we'd like to find a cleaner approach.
