(OP)
Q1) What is a closed-face tunnelling?

So far I know open-face tunnelling is the tunnel face of the ground being excavated will stand up with no support for a short period of time.

There is few common method to tunnel that i know:
1) TBM (Tunnel boring machine)
2) NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling method)
3) EARTH PRESSURE BALANCED MACHINE (EPBM)

Q2) So these method can be constructed in open-face or closed faced?

RE: What is closed-face tunnelling

a blind shield is a full face shield with doors that can be opened to remove the material.

a full face shield covers the entire working face. Excavated material is removed by augers or as a slurry automatically. no personal can enter the excavation area.  It includes both TBM and EPBM as well as others

RE: What is closed-face tunnelling

Go to a few 'trade shows' on undergound construction and/or trenchless methods. There will be one in San antoio in Jan and one in Nashville in March. The vendors are all very knowledgeable. Also check out 'trenchlessonline'.
