AWS D1.1 Test plate

AWS D1.1 Test plate

AWS D1.1 Test plate

I have a welder doing a test to AWS D1.1. Figure 4.21 the Root opening shows 1/4" is there a tolerance? Just like angle shows 45 degrees is there a tolerance on that also?

Thank you.

RE: AWS D1.1 Test plate

in D1.1 2010 it shows prequalified CJP single V-goove weld(2) butt joint(B) they have tolerance listed there can we use those or is Figure 4.21 set in stone?

RE: AWS D1.1 Test plate

If you are using a prequalified WPS then you must stay within the tolerances given.

If you intend to qualify you own procedure then use whatever you wish as long as the procedure is acceptable after destructive and non destructive testing requirements.

RE: AWS D1.1 Test plate

It says qualified to AWS prequalified joint details. That's it. So what do I do? I aksed our engineer this same question and he said.....

Find the picture in D1.1 that looks most like the joint youre welding to......

Seriously....... That's his answer.

RE: AWS D1.1 Test plate

Arguably, yes, you can use other joint details such as those identified in Clause 3 if the WPS states the use of prequalified joint details.  The intent of 4.21 and similar figures is primarily to identify the location of specimen removal.

Interp D1-84-014(2) indirectly provides further "permission" to use qualified or prequalified WPS's for qualification, upon which your joint details would be specified.

Just another of many ways AWS code contradicts itself.

RE: AWS D1.1 Test plate

I agree with connectegr,
Tolerances given in D1.1 are for "As Detailed" or "As Fit Up".
These are not applicable to a test plate.

Kiwi

RE: AWS D1.1 Test plate

Clause 4 provides figures of specific test plate configurations for the purpose of welder performance qualification. They are not necessarily the same, and in some cases are not the same, as the prequalified joints depicted in figure 3.4. The tolerances applicable to Figure(s) 3.4 have nothing to do with welder performance qualification.

There are no provisions in Clause 4 that permits the welder to be qualified using a joint detail that differes from one of those depicted in Clause 4 with one exception. The exception is for a welder that welded the test plate used to qualify a WPS in accordance with Clause 4. The condition includes passing all the requisite NDT and destructive testing requirements.

RE: AWS D1.1 Test plate

I just looked up interpretation D1-84-014(2). It reads as follows:

Subject: Performance Qualification RT/Bend Requirements
Code Edition: D1.1-81

Code Provision: Subsections 5.26, 5.37

AWS Log: D1-84-014(4)

Inquiry: Why are not both radiographic testing and mechanical testing required for welder or welding
operator qualification in 5.26 and 5.37?

Response: In the Committee's opinion, either radiography or mechanical bend tests are acceptable for
determining the soundness of the weld.

How does that interpretation relate to the question in this post?

Best regards - Al
