CFC Table 2306.2 Note "a" references ...nothing?

CFC Table 2306.2 Note "a" references ...nothing?

CFC Table 2306.2 Note "a" references ...nothing?

(OP)
CFC Table 2306.2 Note "a" states: "When automatic sprinklers are required for reasons other than those in Chapter 23, the portion of the sprinkler system protecting the high piled storage area shall be designed and installed in accordance with Sections 2307 and 2308. "

Why would it say that it is required to be designed and installed in accordance with Sections 2307 and 2308, when both sections immediately say "When automatic sprinklers are required by Table 2306.2..."? Note "a" is only referenced when sprinkler systems are not required. This seems to be a contradiction.

Can anyone explain the meaning of this? I thought maybe they were just referencing the shelving and rack height requirements of Sections 2307 and 2308, but it specifically talks about sprinkler systems.

Thanks.

RE: CFC Table 2306.2 Note "a" references ...nothing?

The footnote is necessary because the IBC offers many reasons for designers to provide automatic sprinklers including reductions in fire resistance, increases or reductions in certain means of egress components, etc. If systems originally designed for reasons indicated are suddenly being used for high piled combustible storage, footnote A requires that the sprinkler system be designed for the protection of commodity based on the storage method.

Hi Stookey,

Yes, but table 2306.2 specifically states that a fire suppression system is not required for the HPS area (for example 0-500 sq. ft.). How can it not be required yet be required to protect storage? What is the point of even saying the sprinkler system itself is not even required to be in existence, yet when sprinklers are required for reasons outside the scope of HPS, they have to be designed to support those particular commodities in the HPS area?

It would make more sense that the sprinkler systems can remain as-is at lower protection criteria (so long as they adequately protect the other hazards they were designed for), since the HPS area does not even need to have a sprinkler system at all.

Am I way off base with my reasoning here? Do you at least see where I'm coming from given the verbiage in the code?

Thanks!

Not sure if following the question

But if you are in a no high piled design than chapter 23 does not apply
