Deadman design?

Deadman design?

Deadman design?

(OP)
I am mechanical engineer. I am a newbe to this forum. I don't know squat about attaching things to dirt. I am laying a cable across a creek bed and hanging some loads on the cable. My cable tension with 5 times safety factor is 9125#. My design life is 20 yrs. The dirt is Tulsa, OK gumbo clay in Oklahoma jungle/cow pasture with lots of moisture in the spring wet season. A shale layer is about 10ft below grade. What is a cheap/quick method of building a deadman/anchor to hold this cable that won't shift/creep much with time? Where can I find info on soil design properties and examples of foundations/deadmen/anchors/etc that I can use for this application? Link's to the info would be very helpful. I have initially thought about drilling with a post hole digger, a 12in dia hole about 6ft deep and cementing 6in steel pipe into the hole and attaching to this. I figured on using 3 of these on each end. Would this work? I can't get a warm fuzzy feeling that this won't shift/creep over time. Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

RE: Deadman design?

NAVFAC DM 7.02 (formally 7.2 I believe) has a design method for guy anchors in soil.  Check Figure 18.  It is copywrited and I couldn't fine any free copies of it these days though.

RE: Deadman design?

Google NAVFAC 7.2 or 7.02 and you will find sites such as VulcanHammer's site that you can download the document from.  Also, you might check out Bowles foundation book - it has a section on dead-men anchors.

There have been other threads on the subject in the forums too.  Use the search feature in this forum.

Oh, and check with your local mortician.
