Use of RF Pad in Div.2 vessel having full radiography.

Hi,

1.What is 100% radiography and full radiography in ASME Div.1 and ASME Div.2.
2.Can we give RF pad for category D joint if client is asking for full radiography in Div. 2 vessel..?
3.What is the criteria for giving lip type forging as per table 4.2.13 ? is it client requirement/service requirement..? or something else, Please advice.

Regards.

RE: Use of RF Pad in Div.2 vessel having full radiography.

When I see "full" radiography, i think of full per code requirements.

If the user/client wants Q-Lip forgings and radiography of nozzle attachment welds, it needs to be spelled out on drawings, user design spec, and specifications.

RE: Use of RF Pad in Div.2 vessel having full radiography.

It depends on whether the client is asking for full radiography to minimize the shell thickness or as a condition of service (i.e. lethal service).

If it is for lethal service, you must use the fully radiographable joints per code (Division 1).  If not, you may be able to use an alternate type of joint.

RE: Use of RF Pad in Div.2 vessel having full radiography.

100% radiography often means that welds that could be exempted in a vessel otherwise qualifing for an RT-1 stamp shall be radiographed as well. Example, welds exempted per UW-11(a)(4).

However this is very subjective. Better to ask the client. Also, that a vessel is to meet full or 100% radiography does not imply that all joints are to be butt joints. Said vessel can contain only one butt joint and still meet full RT.

Get the client to tell you what he wants.

Regards,

Mike
