Can I "save as" and keep drawing link without having drawing open?

Can I "save as" and keep drawing link without having drawing open?

Can I "save as" and keep drawing link without having drawing open?

(OP)
I quite often create new assemblies from existing ones.  So, I save everything to a new folder, and change the names of all parts that will be modified (save as through save management).  However, this requires having the drawing open for every modified part, so it can also be saved.  Is there any way for this brilliantly expensive program to create a new part AND it's associated drawing without me opening them all, and saving them all?

If it's an assembly where only a few parts will be modified, it's annoying, but doable.  When I have an assembly with several parts to be mofified, not only is it annoying, but my old PC starts to quiver...

Closer9,
They have a module for this, Product Knowledge Template (PKT).  You can capture, catalog and instantiate assemblies with drawings attached.

You could use the File - New From command.  It will create a new assembly with drawing.  You will not be able to issue the command to an assembly loaded in the current session of Catia.  You will need to open a new session, File --> New From --- then save it to a new folder.  This like the previous post creates new UUID numbers on the parts and products.

Derek

Okay, I tried the New From command.  It only allows me to create a new drawing for the assembly, no drawing gets carried over for any new parts.  Unless I'm overlooking something.

and as far as the PKT, you say that's a module.  I'm assuming that means extra cost that my company didn't spring for.  How would I find that module if, by chance, I did have it?

thanks!

RE: Can I "save as" and keep drawing link without having drawing open?

Create a drawing linked to Product A.  Then use the New From command on Product A. A list box will show up with all the parts and sub assemblies in Product A.  The drawing should show up in the box too.  Use the All down arrow to move all files to the bottom window.

As for the license - Tools - Options - General - Licensing.  What license codes do you have.

Derek,
It creates the new drawing for the assembly, but that's not my concern here.  There are no other drawings listed in the upper box even though they exist and are properly linked.

and as far as license codes, here's what I have listed.

MD2
ASD
CC1
GDR
ID1
IG1
PDG
ME2
SPA
ST1

Only MD2 box is checked/orange, and ME2, SPA and ST1 say Not Granted, where as all the others say Granted.

Can you explain a little of this to me?

thanks...

RE: Can I "save as" and keep drawing link without having drawing open?

ME2 is a Mechanical Eng 2, spa is DMU space analysis and ST1 is a step translator.

If you had a KT1 license (this is a runtime for PKT. by runtime it will allow you to use anything created by PKT), I would create you a sample to show you what a pkt license will do for you.  I do not work for Dassault or Business partner so this is not a sales pitch.

Did you give the new from on the product a try?

Okay, thanks.

I'm told that early next year we will be getting a PLM.  Not sure what yet.  I'm hoping that will solve a lot of my problems.  So, right now, just looking for work arounds using what's available.  Keeping track of assemblies, and moving/saving, etc in Catia is not a simple task.

Yes, I tried New From.  See the first part of my previous post.  Still couldn't get it to do what I wanted.

RE: Can I "save as" and keep drawing link without having drawing open?

So, what do some of the other codes do, and why would they not be checked?  Like ASD, GDR, ID1 and PDG...

Sorry, only been with Catia for about 4 months (found out this morning I will get to go to some training soon!)

RE: Can I "save as" and keep drawing link without having drawing open?

When you do the New From, the file selection box pops up. Instead of picking only the one drawing file, multi-select all the drawing files you need.
