Upset on stainless steel pipe

Upset on stainless steel pipe

Upset on stainless steel pipe

(OP)
Anybody please advise if it is possible to upset a SS pipe?

If yes, is there any standard procedure? what are the things need to pay attention to, and it there a limit on upset dimension?

If not, what are the reasons?

Thank you in advance.

RE: Upset on stainless steel pipe

eltooon;
Not enough information in your post to provide guidance. Yes, you can upset stainless steel pipe among other things.

However, what are you trying to accomplish using upset forging? Are you swaging the end of the pipe for dimensional tolerances? What are the dimensions of the pipe? What is the grade of stainless steel? What will be the service conditions for the pipe after forming?

RE: Upset on stainless steel pipe

Depending on the alloy and dimensions (start and finish) you may do it cold, warm, or hot.  Each has its won limitations and post treatment requirements.
