Strap locations for side bends

Ever since I can remember, the QC's would take straps from test plates 1 inch from the bottom and top (about 6-8" test coupon).  Since I am now the tester, I take straps 1 inch from either side of the center per D1.1 (ie Fig. 4.21)  Where did the 1" from the bottom and top come from?

RE: Strap locations for side bends

Maybe your QC person couldn't read or didn't have a copy of D1.1.

Sad part is that it is plural, more than 1!  I was curious if it had been listed as a SOP somewhere.

RE: Strap locations for side bends

The "logic" I've seen used in the past dealt with QC's belief that a welder would get lazy or more inclined to include defects due to long arcing and incorrect rod angle towards the ends of the plate.

I'm not sure some QC folk out there have ever seen a code book, never mind opening and reading the thing...

RE: Strap locations for side bends

AWS D1.1-2010, Figure 4.21 and 4.22 clearly indicate where the guided bend samples are to be removed from the test plates.

While the numbers associated with the figures may change, the figures themselves have been in D1.1 for many years. I have a copy of D1.1-1979, and it includes the same figures.

Best regards - Al

RE: Strap locations for side bends

The only applicable SOP I have experienced on plate tests is "The first and last inch belong to the welder".  Which makes it exceptionally unfair to immediatly lift out a test strap from 1 and-a-fraction inches from either end.

If the idjit QC wants to know about all of the coupon, have it radiographed - RT'd.
