Re-Tensioning an Abandoned Anvil B 268 Spring Hanger?

Re-Tensioning an Abandoned Anvil B 268 Spring Hanger?

Re-Tensioning an Abandoned Anvil B 268 Spring Hanger?

(OP)
I've been handling pipe systems for a while, but this problem has not come up before.

A previous outage removed some 18 inch pipes and their pipe strap hangers.   One old spring hanger (Anvil-Grinnel Fig B-268, Size 11, Type A) was left in place, but it was unloaded completely when its original pipe clamp was removed.

The hanger had a pre-load of 1839 lbs.   With no pre-load at all right now - of course - the spring is "topped out" to the top of the can.

We have been tasked to replace the original piping and re-use this spring hanger.

What special precautions or warnings are required to do this?  Seems it is a matter of supporting the new pipe with a separate chainfall and straps.  Clamping the old hanger's rod and pulling the spring down (towards the loaded position) with a chainfall on the temporary clamp until the spring is back at the 1839 lbs position, then re-insert an equivalent pair of new pre-load stops.

Once the new stops are re-inserted, then the old pipe hanger can be fitted out and tightened up as usual for a new spring hanger.

RE: Re-Tensioning an Abandoned Anvil B 268 Spring Hanger?

1800+ lbs is something that you do not want to fool with UNLESS you know EXACTLY what you are doing.  It CAN kill you.  And I have no idea.

Check w/ mfg or find old manual
