Unroll a Cylinder?

Unroll a Cylinder?

Unroll a Cylinder?

(OP)
Hi,

Is there a way to take a cylinder and unroll it into a flat sheet?

I have NX7.5 and NX8.0.

Thanks in advance!

Hockeyguy

RE: Unroll a Cylinder?

Assuming that your cylinder already has a thicknes (if not use Shell command)

Cut it open along the axis with a marginal width (e.g. 0.2mm)

Go to NX Sheet Metal

Convert to sheet metal

Preferences - Sheet Metal - change bend neutral factor to 0.5 (then your flat pattern will result in a correct part)

Define your flat pattern (and if needed flat solid)

export flat pattern to GEO (NX 7.5) and/or DXF (NX8.0)

2x NX 7.5.4.4 mp2 and NX8.0.0.25 Mach Design
1x Solid Edge ST2

Frankbe,

Thanks for the response and info!!!!

Yes the"tube" has thickness. How do I place a cut into it,  the tube will have a but welded joint after it is rolled.

How did you come up with the "bend neutral factor to 0.5" value?

Thanks again!

RE: Unroll a Cylinder?

Another option, you could "unwrap" the edge curves of the cylinder.  I think you'll have to divide the face, similar to the "cut" suggested earlier, and have a datum plane tangent to the OD to unwrap the edge curves on to.
