NX 7.5 Spline Point Constructor

NX 7.5 Spline Point Constructor

NX 7.5 Spline Point Constructor

(OP)
I'm trying to use the Spline Tool using Through Points->Point Constructor. I've used this tool a lot in previous versions of NX, but I'm rather new to 7.5. When I try to place the points in free space (not on a snap point), they are placed at the correct X coordinate but always along the Y=0 coordinate. I've tried to change the type from Inferred Point to Cursor Location, but I always get the same result. If I manually type in a different Y coordinate or click on a Snap Point, then the point will go there. I've never had this problem with previous versions of NX, so I'm guessing there is a setting somewhere that I need to change.

RE: NX 7.5 Spline Point Constructor

It's possible that you've rotated the WCS 90° about the X-axis so that the Y-axis is now pointing in what was the Z-axis direction.  So when you use the Point Constructor the default Coordinates 'Reference' is relative to the Absolute Coordinate system, NOT the WCS, which in this case would be reported a Y being the 'zero' plane.  If in the Point Constructor dialog you change the Coordinate 'Reference' to WCS it should now behave as you expect it to.

RE: NX 7.5 Spline Point Constructor

I believe this is partially the problem. In older versions I think the WCS automatically updated to the sketch orientation. Now if I sketch on anything but the XY-plane, I have to manually change the WCS to the sketch coordinate system, and then do as you suggested with the Reference. Is there a way to set this automatically so I don't have to change the WCS for every Sketch I do?

RE: NX 7.5 Spline Point Constructor

Why are you entering points with explicit values in the Sketcher?  Why not just drop the points close to where you need them and if you've got the Auto-Dimension option ON, you'll get a pair of dimensions for each point which you can immediately edit or replace with the desired one.

As for changing the default, there's no option for that.  Since Points can now be created as Parametric features (granted, not inside a Sketch) and since those values (X,Y,Z) are ALWAYS stored in Absolute values, even if the WCS does not match the Absolute CSYS, it was felt that the Point Constructor should at least default to Absolute so as to reduce the chance that users are mislead into thinking that something else is happening.
