Help!!! DIN 3960, Fhbm, quality control on gears, general info
(OP)
Dear all,
I'm an automotive engineer, 1 year work experience in vehicle testing and I recently changed job. In this job I'm asked to improve gear noise, as the gears I am talking about are helical gears I'm looking into a so called fhbm value (din 3960). I've seen values that indicate that this value is out of spec...
But I feel my (school) knowledge about gears is not enough, or I forgot to much.. can someone refer me to a good book on gearwheels, send me din 3960 or any other document that could help me to rapidely increase my knowledge? I'm a little left on my own on the job...
It's amazing how less good detailed info you can find about gears
Thank you in advance!!!

correction :
The value I am refering to is fhβm, it's the average helix slope deviation
(I think)

I found a lot of stuff on the internet but only general about fabrication, basic design, evolvente etc.... not so much on the quality control of gears... how do they look different from the ideal profile and what checks are done....

Second hand textbooks from EBay and Amazon are also a good source of gear design information.
In answer to your question; it all depends on the accuracy grade required for the application.

You can obtain DIN 3960 from the official distributor Beuth:

The following are some links to references on gears. Books by Dudley, Drago, and Litvin are especially comprehensive.

You might want to try them. They are not free however. They offer gear courses on gear noise and how to reduce same.
