Convert shell into solid

Convert shell into solid

Convert shell into solid

(OP)
Hi all,

Basically i have a shell model and i wish to import it into Abaqus/CFD for fluid analysis, however it only accept solid model. Thus, i was thinking of thickening the surface and turn it into a solid.

Can someone advice me on how to do it or any other methods to turn it into a solid?

No 1 has any idea on this?

RE: Convert shell into solid

In abaqus Part ,,. Create Solid : From shell.

Maybe?

Thx for the reply. Actually i had tried this method before but i keep getting the an error message "Shell to solid conversion failed"

*bump*

Any 1 has any suggestion on how to do this? I tried various methods (Solidworks, etc) but i just can't seem to thicken the surface and make it into a solid.

RE: Convert shell into solid

Usually I would use the option 'Convert shell to solid' for this also. There are two likely reasons its not working for you. 1. Your geometry is not well defined, Abaqus warns you of this when you import it. Try 'cleaning' it up using the geometry repair tools in Abaqus or in whatever software you're getting the geometry from. 2. The ends of the part must be closed before it can be converted into a solid, they are open in your part.

If you want to convert the whole thing into a solid you'll have to sort out your geometry problems first. If you only want to assign it a 'thickness' you may be able to get away with meshing the shell, converting to an orphan mesh and converting the shell elements to solid elements.

Thx for the advice! I tried out your suggestion and it worked! As you said, the part must be closed.

However, the problem i am facing now is that the part cannot be closed.

To give more info on the problem: The simulation i am hoping to do is a co-simulation with Abaqus/CFD and Abaqus/Standard.

The part i uploaded is a stent. The stent is suppose to be fitted internally into a blood vessel and the 1st step is to shrink-fit the stent into the vessel.

The 2nd step is to use Abaqus/CFD to simulate blood flow through the blood vessel and Abaqus/Standard for stress/deformation/displacement analysis on the stent as the blood flow through it.

Is there a way to "thicken" the part and make it similar to a cylinder?
