Hydrogen Vessel Repair

Hydrogen Vessel Repair

Hydrogen Vessel Repair

(OP)
Going to be putting together a repair package for a 10,000 psig hydrogen service vessel.  I need to replace a nozzle.  was hoping for any recommendations/guidance in terms of material, tests, or anything else I should be aware of or discuss because it is in high pressyure hydrogen service (temp range is about 120 deg F max).

Thanks everyone.

RE: Hydrogen Vessel Repair

First off, you should be following the specific requirements of either API 510 or NBIC for weld repairs.

Considering the pressure of this vessel, you need to have engineering calculations to support the installation of a new nozzle. The calculations need to be performed in accordance with the original code of construction requirements for this pressure vessel. I would suggest you contact a firm that specializes in design of high pressure vessels to have them do this on your behalf.

You will also want to have the original design and fabrication packages.  That should give you some guidance.

RE: Hydrogen Vessel Repair

Depending on (1) ambient temp,(2) how long it has been out of service, (3) if it has an austenitic overlay, (4) how fast it was cooled ,(5)thickness, and(6) ?; it could contain enough dissolved H to cause welding problems. Without knowing any of the background; 24 hours at 200 to 400 F would be a conservative bake-out plan.
