ICF Walls above 10ft

ICF Walls above 10ft

ICF Walls above 10ft

(OP)
I have designed a couple of ICF homes with 8-10ft plate height where prescriptive design is allowed. However we are being approached about a commercial building with wall heights of 15-20ft. We are probably going to use flat wall. My question is what ACI method is most commonly used? Empirical design method from ACI 14.5 or Slender wall method from ACI 14.8? Any other input for commercial application is appreciated. Thanks!

RE: ICF Walls above 10ft

I've done a couple of commercial buildings with walls from 15' to 20' without any problems.  I used a slender wall approach (actually the ACI method) and wrote my own interaction diagram programs to calculate the capacities.

The Portland Cement Association has a couple of soft cover books for ICF wall construction.

I did the first (I think) ICF building in Manitoba about 40 years ago using a product called FoamForm.  It was a 3 storey 'walk-up' in Dauphin, Manitoba...

Pull the manufacturer's ICC report and follow their recommendations. There are many ways these walls are built (solid core, hollow cells @ 15" o.c....)

RE: ICF Walls above 10ft

Different ICF manufacturer's have slightly different configurations...

RE: ICF Walls above 10ft

I have designed 4 story ICF and plank hotels.  I typically have to design by Chapter 10 of the ACI 318 since my stress violates any of the chapter 14 methods.
