SVC Design

SVC Design

Does anybody know how to decide the number of branches in a SVC?

The question is to design a SVC using TSC and TCR for smooth control say around -100 to 400 mvar connected to a 345 kv bus via a transformer of suitable size. Kindly help! I really dont know where and how to start!

Also, how to design filter for the same and perform loss calculations?

Thanks!

RE: SVC Design

You could probably start by defining your TLAs.

aka - TLA = Three Letter Acronym

Static VAR compensator, its very urgent, i have to submit report this week!!

RE: SVC Design

One down. Two to go.
Hint. Do you have a target PF envelope? (TPFE) If all else fails you can use a WAG solution.

I have been asked to design a solution employing an SVC which uses a Thyristor Controlled Reactor and Thyristor Switched Capacitance.

The Req. control for voltage is 0.95 pu-1.05 pu..
Also filters for 5th and 7th harmonics are needed. Smooth control over -150 inductive to 400 capacitive with maximum switching of 150 mvar possible.

I know how to achieve smooth but there are multiple techniques.

Does anybody know a definite way of doing this?

Is this for school?

Nope, i'm working on a project.

Its integrating wind energy into the grid in western US without disturbing reliability and stability of the grid!

RE: SVC Design

Minimum KVAR steps may be influenced by the smallest readily available capacitors.

I was personally thinking of having one TCR of 550 mvar and four 100 mvar capacitive which switch in giving it a smooth control.
The place where im stuck is the filter and whether the capacitor branches are acceptable.

RE: SVC Design

It is necessary to follow these steps for SVC, FC part design:

1.Defining load profile
2.Harmonic analysis of the load
3.Harmonic Analysis of TCR part

ABB and some others have fixed harmonic portions according to application.

RE: SVC Design

With all your questions, you need someone else to do this for you. Did your boss ask you to finish it this week? You need another boss.

It is a big project and nothing you shall do without having any experience at all. Ask ABB, they have done hundreds and hundreds SVCs.

Half full - Half empty? I don't mind. It's what in it that counts.

RE: SVC Design

Define a SVC takes half a year to one year to getinto specification stage. You need another boss.
