Strainer types and uses.

Strainer types and uses.

(OP)
Dear all,
In a refinery project we are doing, we are installing a pump to pump butane to a sphere. The refinery specification is saying that for pipe size 3 inch and below Y- Type strainer is to be used and for sizes above 3", T-Type strainer is to be used.

Can anyone please tell me the reason why T type strainer (for  8" suction line) is to be used? Is there any technical reasons for using this T-Type strainers for higher line sizes? The suction line size is of 8" which is reduced to 4".

Thanks & Rgrds,

ARP

RE: Strainer types and uses.

T strainers intended as basket strainers have a higher dirt holding capacity than Y strainers. Higher capacity implies reduced cleaning frequency. This could be a reason why they're preferred for higher pipe size.

You should also check the cost differences between the two types in the large sizes.  I think that will answer your question.
