Well my mission has brought to a public forum to beg some stranger for help. I'm not proud.

In any case I can't seem to find anyone in a 2000 mile radius of Knoxville tn who has a shore-d durometer who would be willing to do some very unscientific testing for me. One place I did find wants $120 per sample. Along with not being proud I'm not rich. I will gladly send someone enough money for some pizza and a beer if they would be willing to spend a half hour putting their durometer to work!

Approach a Mechanical Engineering department at a university or college - they may help

Id like to invest in my own Rex gauges, but this is a one time kind of thing. I hadn't even heard of a durometer until a couple weeks ago!

I called the local university and spoke with the material sciences division. Either they were blowing me off or they just didnt have one. This is what finally led me to start the begging process!

I had the same issue and bought one on EBay cheaply. I'd recommend that approach. Worked for me anyway and there are plenty there.
