Femap prestations Dualcore vs i7

Femap prestations Dualcore vs i7

(OP)
Hello,

I have a problem which shouldn't be there in theory. Im working on same plate models in FEMAP, with about 80000 elements. The laptop im working on has the following specs:

Windows xp 32 bit.
Intel C2D T9500 @2,6 Ghz (dualcore)
3 gig ram
generic HD

Out of curiosity I tried running the same simulation on my macbook pro. I have a windows partition on there.

Windows 7 64 bit
Intel Core i7 2635QM @2 Ghz (quadcore)
4 gig ram
generic HD

The result: the macbook is slower than the original laptop. This doesnt seem reasonable to me? Are there any settings or paramters i should use for optimization for my macbook?

hoping to hear from you,

Bert

RE: Femap prestations Dualcore vs i7

Hi

Since 64 bit W7 uses more ram than 32 bit XP it may actually be so that Femap gets less memory on the macbook. Also, Femap does not use more than one core so the quadcore doesn't really add any performance. I can't say that I'm very surprised by the results. It also depends on what you mean by "slower", how much slower?

Are you using 64 bit Femap on the 64 bit machine?

Regards

/Thomas

Hi

I run 32 bit femap on the laptop and 64 bit on the macbook. I tried a quick install on my desktop (AMD 1055T, 4 gig ram, 32bit) and got the same results as the macbook: up to 30 percent slower than the original laptop.

Im very surprised, but thanks for your explanation.

If anyone has any tips regarding this topic. Please post them!

Bert

RE: Femap prestations Dualcore vs i7

Hi

When you say "simulation" in Femap. What does that mean exactly?
I'm just curious regarding the memory requirements.

On a side note I can say that provided you give Femap 64 bit enough memory it is significantly faster than the 32 bit version.

Im running a static analysis simulation. I found that femap and nastran only use one core of your processor. Only on specific jobs femap uses more processors. You can define the amount of processors in the second tab when making a new analysis set.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

If you don't define the number of processors, i think it defaults to "all" ?
