Maximum Manway size on 44" Diameter Vessel - PD 5500

Maximum Manway size on 44" Diameter Vessel - PD 5500

(OP)
Hi,

I am designing a 44" Diameter Vessel with a 24" Manway.  Can this be done and if so where in PD 5500 specification does it state this is acceptable?

Any help would be most appreciated!

Regards

Chris

RE: Maximum Manway size on 44" Diameter Vessel - PD 5500

If I remember right, ASME does not have an absolute limit on manway or nozzle size, but does have a limit for sizes that can be designed using the conventional reinforcing methods- beyond that you get into a tee-type configuration rather a nozzle-in-shell configuration.  But note that you can put a flange on the end of a vessel and have a manway as large as the vessel if desired.

Section 3.5.4.2 of PD 5500 gives opening size limits.

Thank you for the clarification Karloss.  sorry, I am new to the PD 5500 spec in any detail.  The Vessel is cylinderical (44")and Manway (24") which is fitted to the body.  Does that mean the major axis is that of the vessel and the minor axis the nozzle?  Then no greater than the ratio of 2?

I agree...

Half the diameter is the maximum.......22 inches
