Div 2 Impact Test Requirements

Div 2 Impact Test Requirements

I have a question about the impact testing per ASME Section VIII Div 2 section 3.11.4. of SA-240 304L material for a vessel with a design MDMT of 20F.

The way I understand it is that the material is impact tested or the production impacts of Category A and B joint are tested. I do not see any exemption for no impact test.  Is this correct or am I missing something.

RE: Div 2 Impact Test Requirements

Curly,
Have you reviewed the exemptions in par 3.11.4.3?

RE: Div 2 Impact Test Requirements

If you check 3.11.4.3, 3.11.4.4, and 3.11.4.5, they all exempt 304L material from impact testing above -20°F.  It is very uncommon to require impact testing of austenitic stainless steels except for very low temperatures.

Ok I missed that 3.11.4.2 was for thermally treated plates.

Also I looked and the vessel is rated at MDMT is -55F but this is still in the exempt range.

Thanks for the replys.
