2 spd. single phase motor winding connection colours?

2 spd. single phase motor winding connection colours?

2 spd. single phase motor winding connection colours?

(OP)
I'm fixing a Austrian made sawbench (Emco-star) with a 230V 2 speed single phase motor.   The previous "fixer" disconnected the motor wires.  I have a wiring diagram but the colours are not specified for winding connections U, Um, V, Vm, W & Wm.  The colours are: red, white, blue, green, grey & yellow.  What are the standard colours for the windings U, Um and so on?

Thanks - Tony, New Zealand

RE: 2 spd. single phase motor winding connection colours?

U, V & W sounds more like connections for THREE PHASE motors not single phase. Contact the manufacturer or call around to some local electric motor repair shops that have seen that type of motor.

Hi Kiwitony
I also have a EMCO Star combinnation woodworking machine to repair looks like its lost the starter winding. If you have fixed yours I'd be grateful for any info you may have gathered this looks like its happened before.
Kind Regards
Tony

Hi Tony, yes I did get the motor going after all.  It was for a neighbour so I'll see him and refer to the notes I made in the back of the owners manual.  I updated the drawing there so it was far more useful than the manufacturer provided.  Will be in touch in a few days.

Cheerio for now - Tony

RE: 2 spd. single phase motor winding connection colours?

Hi Tony
Many thanks for your quick response to my request for info on the EMCO star. My machine refuses to start and it appears that the start winding is faulty, however my local rewinder says it may be the switch or capacitor but he has never seen a 2 speed single phase motor ever. I have asked EMCO for a manual and they are able to send me one ( as usual at a cost) but say that little is available for the machine in the way of spare parts. I would like to get the machine working as it will do so much in a small space.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards
Tony

RE: 2 spd. single phase motor winding connection colours?

Maybe just your location, but nearly every hot tub here in Florida has a two speed single phase motor in it for the pump! They can be twice as hard to figure out too.

RE: 2 spd. single phase motor winding connection colours?

While in college (about 6 years ago), I worked in the engineering department at a factory that makes electric motors.  We made thousands of different models, and often times the only difference between certain models was the lead (or winding) colors.  So, in short, I don't think there is a standard for lead colors, and if there is, I don't think it is widely followed.

Hi, well here's the winding names & wire colours:
The Delta triangle has at its points U,V & W. (Clockwise from top)
Each side has 2 windings.
The mid-point  (between the 2 windings) is Um for side UV, Wm for side VW, and Vm for side WU.

Red from U connects to switch terminal 5
Blue from V connects to switch terminal 7
Grey from W connects to switch terminal 10

White from Um connects to switch terminal 1
Green from Wm connects to switch terminal 18
Yellow from Vm connects to switch terminal 3

The manual specifies the switch as a Dahlander C14B 443 EC with rotary switching and reverse lock from switch positions 2 to 1 and 0 to 2.  Our has a Kraus & Naimer for which the current repacement is CA20 A443 600 EG + M400.

Phase supply connect to switch terminal 13
Neutral connects to switch terminal 2.

The Dahlander switch diagram shows 5 layers of switches.  The K&N does the same job with 4 layers by making use of a spare contact on the 4th layer.

I'd be happy to e-mail a scanned diagram or post a copy of the manual for the cost of postage.  Just let me know via tonyDOTsavageATmeridianenergyDOTcoDOTnz

Cheerio for now & best of luck - Tony

RE: 2 spd. single phase motor winding connection colours?

Suggestion: It appears that the good way to go about this problem is to post the motor nameplate data, and try to recreate the original motor connection with the manufacturer tech support assistance.

Yes, agreed - that's the simplest way - I tried it and of course got no reply.  They make nice looking stuff - to bad support isn't up to scratch.  Cheerio - Tony

RE: 2 spd. single phase motor winding connection colours?

Hi Kiwitony
Many thanks for the information I have finally got it going the faults were a bad connection and short circuit 30uF run capacitor. I tried with the nearest size I had (40uF) and it ran well on top speed but a bit rough on low speed. I have ordered a new capacitor of the correct type so all is now fine. Many thanks for all your help.
Tony
