Suitable Material for H2SO4

Suitable Material for H2SO4

Suitable Material for H2SO4

(OP)
Dear Members,

Please suggest the suitable material for a pressure vessel containing H2SO4.Construction Code is ASME Section VIII-1.
H2SO4 is highly corrosive in nature, we cannot use cladding becuase required thickness against pressure is only 6mm so cladding is not an economical option.
Which one is better SS304 or SS316 or some what else in this case?
Thanks is advance.

RE: Suitable Material for H2SO4

Fizza453;
What is the pressure, temperature and concentration of sulfuric acid? You hvae several material choices pending operational design parameters.

mtengr,

we have got following information from the client
Fluid:Sulfuric Acid, Commercial grade, 97% pure
service: Highly concentrated H2S04
Specific Gravity: 1.84
Pressure: Atmospheric
Design Temperature: 50C
Material shall be NACE complaint.

Hoping for a better solution and advice from you as usual. Thank you.

RE: Suitable Material for H2SO4

Use SA-516 Gr 70 or similar carbon steel.  Concentrated sulfuric and above does not attack carbon steel.  No, it does not make any sense, but H2SO4 becomes more corrosive below 70% concentration than above.

Dear feqenbush,

Brimstoner has shared a document, according to that paper 97% pure H2SO4 will produce 50 mills per year corrosion rate if metal is subjected to 125F as the above case is.
So simple Carbon steel like SA-516 Grade 70 would be okay without any rubber lining?
No need to go for SS304 or SS304L in this case, is it correct too?

RE: Suitable Material for H2SO4

Fizza453,

Carbon steel is used all the time with concentrated H2SO4.  From Pressure Vessel Handbook - 12th edition - Megyesy, Iron and Steel are rated "A" (good) for hot concentrated H2SO4 while 304 stainless is rated "X" (not recommended).  Alloy 20 nozzles are frequently used in conjunction with the carbon steel vessel to avoid corrosion at the areas where the flow of the fluid is likely to wear away the iron sulfate passive layer.  An alternative is to line the interior of the tank with a coating.  In the past, I have used ETFE (DuPont trade name "Tefzel") at 40 mils DFT.
