Greetings:
I am working with ASME Section VIII Div 1 2007 with 09 addenda. I have been asked to design a flat entryway cover for a round dust collector.  The design positive pressure will be 40 psi. The cover will be a rectangular plate. I am calculating the minimum thickness in accordance to section UG-34 and Mandatory Appendix 2.  This cover will be bolted on with an elastomeric seal.  The issue I am having is with determining the variable W for the total bolt load. UG-34(3) accounts for non circular covers and heads, however the definition for W refers to 2-5(e) for the actual calculation of W.  In MA 2 both the equations for Wm1 and Wm2 appear to be circular functions. My question is: Is there a section of the code that addresses flat, bolted covers. Or would it be acceptable to substitute rectangular parameters for the area and circumference that are noted in equations 2-5(1) and 2-5(2)?

Nevermind. I ran the calculation substituting rectangular area and perimeter, and the end result was nearly insignificant.

don't forget that the Wm1 and Wm2 are based on allowable design bolt loads, and that most often field practices are to use bolt loads nearly double these values.  You may want to confirm that flange/cover rotation due to these additional bolt loads will not unseat your seal.
