ASME welder Qualification

ASME welder Qualification

(OP)
To start with I'm a fromer Navy NDT inspector and ASME is really a lot less restrictive. I'm in a learning curve. LOL

My question is where exactly are the acceptance information of a welders qual? I really didn't see out right accepatance in the Sec. IX or V. I'm trying to detremine max weld reenforcement on a welders butt weld qualification. Thanks for the assistance.

RE: ASME welder Qualification

Section IX does not provide the acceptance or rejection of welder qualification on the basis of weld reinforcement. Such rules are contained in Construction Codes like, see UW-33 of Section VIII-1, see PW-33 of Section I.Such rules are given in the construction codes for accepting/rejecting the welds not the welders/welding operators but it is my opinion that these rules may be used for welders/welding operators qualification also.

Fizza, thats make very good sense to me. Thanks for the help.

RE: ASME welder Qualification

Lithone,
Fizza is correct in that Section IX does not provide the acceptance or rejection of welder qualification on the basis of weld reinforcement.

Other codes of construction will dictate the reinforcement of girth and longitudinal butt welds such as ASME B31.1 Power Piping Table 127.4.2 that takes into consideration maximum thickness of reinforcement based on design temperature.

An example from such table is thickness of base metal over 1/8" to 3/16" incl. is 1/16" for temperatures >750 deg F; 1/8" for temps 350-750 deg F; 3/16" for temps <350 deg F.

RE: ASME welder Qualification

Guys,
Just to throw a spanner in the works.

Interpretation: IX-83-149
Subject: Section IX, QW-301.2
Date issued: March 22, 1985
File: BC84-558

Question (2): If the welder is testing under a code - for example, ANSI/ASME B31.1 - is the
supervisor conducting the tests supposed to base his visual requirements on the production weld
visual requirements listed in ANSI/ASME B31.1?
Reply (2): No.

Kiwi

RE: ASME welder Qualification

Basically, the External Reinforcement -- Cap, and Internal Reinforcement -- root penetration/protrusion have beel left up to the interpretation of the person that is Visually accepting/rejecting the coupon weld.  It leaves, IMHO, too much area for the inspector to insert personal opinion.

I tell the welders that ar testing what MY minimums and maximums are.  If I know that he/she will be working on B31.3 only, those limits are generous.  If I know that he/she will be working predominately Sect I and/or B31.1, I inspect to those, tighter, values.  After carefully and clearly informing the testee.
