emergency diesel generator

(OP)
Hi,

I want to design an emergency panel board for diesel generator ,but i have a
problem to automatic starting the diesel, i don't know that for avoidance to
breaking gears of the starter motor what signal must be applied to stop
starter motor from starting after the diesel running?, can i use a Centrifugal relay
on the diesel or an over/under voltage relay on the output voltage of generator?

RE: emergency diesel generator

Why reinvent the wheel? You will save time and maybe money by purchasing one of many readily available "off the shelf" units for engine starting and protection. There are various methods used to determine when to disengage the starter, a few common ones are to sense crankshaft speed via a magnetic pickup, engine alternator output, generator frequency, engine oil pressure or some combination of these.

RE: emergency diesel generator

If you're looking for a low cost robust solution I have used these guys for years, and for both new and mainly retrofit of small to large IC.

I keep one of their 9988N engine controls and a SS40 speed switch on the truck all the time.

Hope that helps, Mike L.

RE: emergency diesel generator

Also note that most starter motors have a over running clutch which disengages the starter motor when the flywheel gear starts to run faster. The gear will still be engaged in the flywheel but the starter motor will be protected.

RE: emergency diesel generator

FYI. I keep up to 6 on my truck. I am always looking for better deals so I looked up and called ECU (I already buy some things from Deep Sea) and they are very expensive, even if I buy 6 at a time. I buy the GCU-20 from MTS McPherson Power Products http://www.mtspowerproducts.com/. The GCU-20 is well under $200. Also I use and love the ES52 DynaGen and buy it here http://www.partsfortechs.com/asapcart/es52-auto-start-engine-control-module-for-generators-engines-p-410.html. On sale now for $208.50. What I like about it is that it has 2 replaceable relays 12 or 24v and a plug in mini 20 amp fuse and these parts are standard aftermarket parts.

RE: emergency diesel generator

Ricky,

The Dynagen stuff is nice, I especially like the 400Plus, heck of a package for the price, I have a job coming up I'll try one on.
Thanks for the link!

Mike L
