Flow Meter Calibration - Qualifications?

Flow Meter Calibration - Qualifications?

Flow Meter Calibration - Qualifications?

(OP)
Wondering if there are any certifications or licensing typically required or issued for flow meter calibration?  That is, I have calibrated a few flow meters for clients over the last year and just written them a letter stating what I did.  A competitor has suggested to a client that you must be certified to do so.  I've not heard of such requirements.  In the past, when I hired a meter rep to calibrate a meter they just issued a letter, with no reference to licensing/certifications.

What have you all experienced?  I'm in North Carolina.  Thanks.

RE: Flow Meter Calibration - Qualifications?

The meter manufacturer has the ability to test and certify meters.

Typically, the  local water meter testing firms test the meters according to the AWWA Standard---Water meters--selection, installation, testing, and maintenance By American Water Works Association.

I am not aware of any licensing requirements.

RE: Flow Meter Calibration - Qualifications?

In my opinion this is a big problem in Pennsylvania. I know of no requirement for any license or registration needed in order to "certify' meter calibration. There is and has been a requirement by PA PUC for calibration of water custody meters, but this only extended to the test equipment. In another life, I required all in house meter techs to maintain a water or wastewater license. I am having two problems today with a magmeter and a Parshall flume that have questionable calibrations. In each case the tech (contract) will happily make the meter read anything I want!
