Pipe in a Section VIII vessel

Pipe in a Section VIII vessel

Pipe in a Section VIII vessel

(OP)
I have a question on code requirements for welding pipe components that form the internals of a Section VIII vessel .
What is the code of construction (if any ) for the  welding of pressure retaining piping components that form part of the internal workings of a Section VIII vessel . If you can provide
a code reference that would be appreciated . I have been told that the designer is responsible for spelling out things like visual acceptance / NDE requirements . Comments ?

RE: Pipe in a Section VIII vessel

The vessel internal pressure retaining components are not classified as pipe or other denomination. They are just components of tubular shape and subject of identical design requirements as any shell component. It is your engineering solution/selection to use a pipe section for that pressure retaining component. Identical to selecting a pipe material for a heat exchanger shell (for eg.). As such, every pressure retaining component of a pressure vessel must be inspected in accordance with ASME code requirements, including your 'pipe' internal component. Please note there is no special reference in the pressure vessel code for components made of pipe.

Thanks very much for your response gr2vessels , what you expressed is exactly what i thought was the case . i am looking for a little further clarification , when you say that every pressure containing component must be inspected as per the ASME code requirements I understand the concept , what i would like to know is what does that mean with respect to these 'round things ' that are now part of the vessel that have been welded together .

Specifically with respect to to visual and NDE requirements , what criteria should i use as an inspector to evaluate the welding visually and with RT ? (Is this a code issue or should it be spelled out by engineering ?)

Thanks again

RE: Pipe in a Section VIII vessel

Based on U-1(e)(2) if your pipe is not welded directly to the containment area, then it does not fall under the scope of the Division.  Therefore you need to revert to the engineering specification.  Considering it is within a pressure vessel, any mode of failure would probably have significant economic impact therefore I'd assume the designer would want the weld to have the same quality as the containment weld.

If your situation falls under the above clause (i.e. welded directly) then back to the Division requirements.

Hi carbonear59,
I understand that you require further clarifications on the internal pipe components retaining pressure. If they are not pressure retaining components, refer to bernoullies reply.
Sorry for the late return (long weekend, fathers day, BBQ, etc.).
For your test requirements, you have to refer to ASME VIII-1, UG-90(b)(15) and UW-51, UW-52. There you have all the NDE requirements and other references for further clarifications, if required.
