Pin Gages

Pin Gages

Pin Gages

(OP)
Hello I'm new in this kind of forums,

some body knows if exist some International Standard for the use of pin gages? (E.g. if the pin has to be forced to pass or if if the pin has to be forced)

I appreciate all the help you can bring me!

RE: Pin Gages

ASME Y14.43-2003(R2008) is the one that deals with dimensioning and tolerancing principles for gages and fixtures, if this is what you are looking for.

RE: Pin Gages

I'm not sure if this is exactly whay you're after but there is DIN7162 "Plain workshop and inspection gauges" if you're of a European persuasion

This specifies how to design a pair of "go no-go" gauges, The idea being that if the 'go' doesnt fit, its wrong and if the 'no-go' fits, its wrong. It doesn't say much about forece required to pass. It doesn't mention much about force to pass but we tend to use 'If it's questionable, its a fail'

Note: this may well be an ISO standard by now, my copy is dated 1965

RE: Pin Gages

ANSI B4.4M-1981
2.3.2. Gages for Holes
2.3.2.1 GO Gages.  A GO cylindrical plug gage should enter the hole over its full length when applied by hand without using excessive force and the hole should be checked throughout its length.  .....

That's the closes it comes to specifics about force.

RE: Pin Gages

Also bear in mind a "go" type gauge system will by design fail 'good' parts. If it didn't, it would 'pass' bad parts, the accuracy of the system is determined by the manufacturing tolerances.

RE: Pin Gages

We have deep drawn parts with cylindrical ID's that we actually specify the gauge pin size that must pass completely through the part with a given force in addition to traditional diameter and roundness requirements.  This is because these thin wall parts are somewhat flexible.  We still ran into contention with the supplier as they were adding weights equivalent to the force requirements (in a 1 G environment) to the gauge pins, which was OK, but then they were giving them a running start by dropping them about an inch!  Next they will shoot them out of a gun.
