In October 2009, NYSDOT and VTrans were in preliminary design for a replacement of the 2,184 feet (666 m) long, 80 year old bridge, when inspectors found dangerous cracks in one of the piers of the old bridge. Because of the risk of sudden catostrophic collapse, it was closed, resulting in a 100 mile detour.
