Welding on Annular bearing plate

Welding on Annular bearing plate

Welding on Annular bearing plate

(OP)
Hi All,

I have a 215' Diameter tank that has a annular ring and an annular bearing plate.  Is it necessary to grind the welds flush between the 2 annular rings?

Thanks for your input.

RE: Welding on Annular bearing plate

I would 'flat-top' the bearing plate welds until they are flush.  Would also use full-penetration welds [no backing bars] on the annular ring.

Would you use the bearing plate as backing for your full pen weld on the annular ring?

RE: Welding on Annular bearing plate

No.  I am assuming that the bearing plate is meant to be fixed, with the annular plate allowed to expand and contract, while sliding on the bearing plate.  Attaching the annular ring by using the dearing plate for weld back-up risks tearing the annular welds at the root [bottom].

Weld every-other piece of the annular ring togather, welding from both sides, like it is normally done.  Lay these segments on the bearing plate. Have the 'tankies' wedge the annular plates up slightly at the splices [th remaining welds], and insert a thin piece of ceramic backing to facilitate the splice welding.  Make sure all ceramic bars are removed prior to building the shell on top of the finished annular ring.
