THICKNESS RANGE-ASME SEC 8 DIV 1 & ASME B 31.3 & ASME SEC IX
THICKNESS RANGE-ASME SEC 8 DIV 1 & ASME B 31.3 & ASME SEC IX
(OP)
Hi all,
I have vendor PQR's and WPS's for review . The construction code is ASME Sec 8 Div 1. In one impact tested PQR, thickness of the plate is 8 mm and the thickness range of the WPS prepared from this PQR is 8mm-16mm.But as I remember, regarding ASME B31.3 if impact tested, the qualification thickness is t/2 - t+6 mm.
Is it so for ASME Sec 8 or do I have to use ASME Sec IX?
I do not have ASME Sec 8 code for review so could you please send the reference numbers & tables in ASME Sec 8 Div 1?
Regards
Kaan

That was not the reply I was expecting.

To be blunt, you have to buy the Codes. This forum does not support theft.

I really didnt get your point of view..

To learn something is not theft. However, asking for the tables from ASME Section VIII because you don't have them, could be considered intellectual theft as those documents are copyrighted.
However, your latest response makes me think you are not a native English speaker and that I might have misinterpreted what you were asking.
Am I correct that you want to know:
1) What is the (maximum and minimum) thickness for an impact test plate when the Code of construction is ASME Section VIII, Division 1?
Specifically, you were given a sample that ranged from t (8 mm) to 2t (16 mm)and you believe you remember that the thickness range should be from t/2 (4 mm) to t + 6mm (10 mm).
2) Where is the above specified -- is it in ASME Section VIII or in ASME Section IX?
I don't know the answer to question 1 off-hand, but I believe that Section IX is the appropriate section.

I dont recall any of the ASME design codes, that spec ASME IX, having any info specific to the geometry or thickness coverage of weld test coupons.
Point being that once qualified appropriately under section IX the weld procedure can be used for fabrication performed under Section XIII, B31.3, B31.1 etc

The applicable fabrication / construction code always overrules the requirements of ASME IX.
However, as weldtek has stated ASME IX impact test essential variables are applicable to ASME VIII construction (UG-84(h)(4)).
As you have noted B31.3 is where you must be careful as the thickness requirements can vary hugely between ASME IX and B31.3,

This is reflective of a more widespread problem: too many amateurs doing the work of experienced professional engineers. The Code is not a how-to manual anyone can simply crack open and start home cooking with. Find a consultant in your area with experience in both the PV Code and in welding engineering (they often go together). Note I did not say 'experience in welding'.
Sorry to be so blunt about it.

By the way, Patricia
I was dealing with my personal stuff , it wouldn't be a lie if I said that I lost my enthusiasm after your response. Anyway not a big deal.

RE: THICKNESS RANGE-ASME SEC 8 DIV 1 & ASME B 31.3 & ASME SEC IX
so if design code here is B31.3 & material requires impact test then will the base metal range will be t/2 to t+6 mm(per B31.3) i.e. 4 mm to 14 mm & not 8 to 16mm per sec IX.?
RE: THICKNESS RANGE-ASME SEC 8 DIV 1 & ASME B 31.3 & ASME SEC IX
RE: THICKNESS RANGE-ASME SEC 8 DIV 1 & ASME B 31.3 & ASME SEC IX
Additionally, if you were to fully qualify a procedure in accordance with ASME IX (tensile + bends + impacts) on 4 mm thick plate, the thickness qualification limits would be 2 mm to 8 mm not 2 mm to 10 mm.
RE: THICKNESS RANGE-ASME SEC 8 DIV 1 & ASME B 31.3 & ASME SEC IX
If you want to use this 4 mm coupon PQR for piping according to 31.3 where impact is required, your limit will be 2 to 10 mm as design code is your govrning code.
RE: THICKNESS RANGE-ASME SEC 8 DIV 1 & ASME B 31.3 & ASME SEC IX
I must totally disagree!! The welding procedure is qualified to 2 mm (1/16") to the 2T limits of ASME IX. B31.3 does not grant exemption from the thickness limits of the qualified welding procedure not subject to impact testing.
RE: THICKNESS RANGE-ASME SEC 8 DIV 1 & ASME B 31.3 & ASME SEC IX
Thanks for your clarification.
In any case thickness qualification can not go beyond 2T per QW 451 of sec IX. I guess i gone too much in 31.3 & overlooked this requirement of IX.
