Steel Rebar Designations

Steel Rebar Designations

Steel Rebar Designations

(OP)
I have the structural drawings for a two way slab and the rebars are called out as 10MB, 10MP, 10MC, 15MT... Any ideas what these letters represent?

RE: Steel Rebar Designations

I'm guessing, but, all Mild steel (as opposed to PS?), Bottom, Perimeter, Center and Top?

RE: Steel Rebar Designations

MB - Middle strip bottom?

MP - Middle strip perpendicular?

MC - Middle strip center?

MT - Middle strip top?

Just guesses.

RE: Steel Rebar Designations

Sounds believable to me.

RE: Steel Rebar Designations

I would think the 10 and 15 are the bar diameters.

Use of M10, etc, usually means 10 millimetres, maybe 10M means the same thing?

B and T, bottom and top.

C, continuous.

P, no idea.

RE: Steel Rebar Designations

I just went P.

Were these plan notations developed by a structural engineer or an architect?  How old are the drawings?  I assume they are from outside the US?

RE: Steel Rebar Designations

Could these be notations referring to a bar bending schedule, not necessarily bar placement?

they are structural drawings made in Canada. They are fairly old. 1980's.

RE: Steel Rebar Designations

Canadian rebar designations are as follows:

10M - 10mm rebar

15M - 15mm rebar

etc.

The B, P C, T designations are uncommon - I'm not sure what they mean.

RE: Steel Rebar Designations

My Canadian detailing contact says the 10M and 15M are 10 mm and 15 mm bars, respectively.  He did not recognize the other letters as any standard designations.  He agrees that they could be top, bottom, center, but I would hope there is a legend in the plans (like a typical elevation/section showing cut-offs, etc.) since they are not standard.

RE: Steel Rebar Designations

I thought the canadian designations always had an A at the end?

RE: Steel Rebar Designations

Nope, Canadian designations are xxM, where the xx is the nominal diameter in mm. I see 10ME and sometimes 10MG for epoxy coated and galvanised, but am unfamiliar with the notation used above.

I believe it went right over gwynn's head, eh?
