Can I use 17-4 stainless for vessel wall using ASME section vii div 1?
Can I use 17-4 stainless for vessel wall using ASME section vii div 1?
(OP)
Section VIII Div. 1 part UHA-11 general (a) seems to say that I can use any of the materials listed in table UHA-23 for my pressure vessel wall. Included in table UHA-23 is material "SA-705 S17400 630", which is 17-4 stainless.
I was hoping someone could confirm this, as in Section VIII Div. 2 they list 17-4 as being only allowable for bolting. Thanks!

The reason why we need to use this material is primarily the higher strength and weldability. We are designing a pressurized tube that will need to also act as a very stiff spring.
If we cannot use any S17400 for this component, then we will need to use something of similar allowable stress. The type 630 S17400 steel has a 266 MPa (38.5 Ksi) allowable stress at room temperature. Does anyone know of any readily available materials with this sort of strength that can be used as pressure vessel walls as per Section VIII div 1 or 2?
Thanks again!
