wheel punching through cantilever slab ?
wheel punching through cantilever slab ?
(OP)
Is it necessary to check for punching shear (wheel load punching through) for cantilver deck slabs ? I have difficulty visualising as for a simply supported slab supporting a wheel, the wheel pushes downward and the tension reinforcement is at the far face of the slab. For a cantilever slab, the reinforcement is at the near face of the slab -the same face in contact with the wheel, and this reinforcement layout does not seem to be effective against punching shear.

The closest I can find to this in the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications is C4.6.2.1.6, where the intent is not to check shear in every deck. Punching shear in cantilver slabs at the toe of a railing post or barrier should be investigated, per AASHTO LRFD 9.7.1.5, but I suspect this is not what you're asking about.
If you're using different specifications then the answer may differ, but the references above may provide guidance.
