API-653 appendix G - Scanning quals

API-653 appendix G - Scanning quals

API-653 appendix G - Scanning quals

(OP)
Hello everybody,

I've got a little interoffice debate that i want to get some outside views on.

Appendix G in API-653 is the "Qualification of Tank Bottom Examination Procedures and Personnel"

There is a lot to App G but what is the focal point is G.4.4 which states,

"G.4.4 The authorized inspection agency is responsible for training each scanning operator they employ.  each scanning operator should receive a minimum of 40 hours of training.  This training should include:

a) Instruction on the NDE principles/methods used by the bottom scanner, limitations and application of the specific scanning equipment and procedure, scanning equipment calibration and operation, kiey scanning equipment operating variables, etc.;

b)hands-on operation of the bottom scanner under the direct supervision of a qualified scanning examiner."

Our company's NDT written practice has Magnetic Flux Leakage as a method, but this is for all applications of MFL and has 20 hours training and 280 hours experience in the method required for the Level II certification.

The MFL scanner manufacturer offers an 8-hour class.  They say people ask about the 40-hrs often but they don't know what they would do in that time.

We are discussing adding a Limited Level II Application to our written practice for the use of MFL for tank floor scanning only.

We're all in agreement up to this point.  Different people have different ideas about the training/experience time to assign to the Limited Application in our written practice.

I'm on the side of 8 classroom / 32 OJT.  Our corporate ASNT Level III is considering leaning towards 40 classroom and some amount of OJT.

I'm interested in hearing if others have incorporated tank floor scanning into their ASNT Written Practice and any other insights.  I haven't found any commentary about this after looking through the internet or any of my API documents.

RE: API-653 appendix G - Scanning quals

8 & 32 sounds OK from a practical standpoint.  Problem is, ASNT requires a LOT of training & OJT for everything.  Your L/III is suggesting something resembling a [full] L/II in a standard method.  Try showing your III that your proposed hours work, by running a couple of people thru your short-course.  If they perform well on a tank, with your III supervising, he/she will have no evidence to demand more training/OJT.
