Pop-Up Note on Open

Pop-Up Note on Open

Pop-Up Note on Open

(OP)
Can I add a pop-up note to a model so anyone who opens it will get the message? Macro?

RE: Pop-Up Note on Open

To a specific part file or any part file which you happen to open?

To a specific part.

Thanks.

RE: Pop-Up Note on Open

That might be a tough one to try to program in, but it could be done I suppose if you could add say a special attribute to the part file and then have a program which would execute every time you opened a part file which would read the attributes of the part being opened and upon finding this particular attribute you could have it display your message.

Now for a much 'cheaper' albeit less high-tech approach, I know people who have wanted to do something like this and so they go to the Layer function and set the Work Layer to be some empty Layer, turn all the others OFF and then write a note with whatever message they wanted the next person opening the file to see, which instuctions on how to get back to the complete part, then saveing the part with this message being displayed.  That way when the part is opened, only the Work Layer with the message would be seen.  I know it's very low-tech, but hey, it gets the job done winky smile

That should work. Any way to get the preview before open to show the part?

Thanks.

RE: Pop-Up Note on Open

If you go to File -> Properties -> Preview (tab) you can change the preview creation from 'on save' to 'on demand'. Create a preview when the model is shown, then change to the note layer, hide the model, whatever you need to do and save the part.

RE: Pop-Up Note on Open

Actually there IS a solution for adding a pop-up note to an NX Part File on a file by file basis.

This can be done as part of the PMI Module, which while it is an extra cost item, it is included in many of the bundles which our customers have been purchasing so it's possible that even if you have never used it before that you already have this capability.  To see if you do have the PMI license, go to the Start menu and toggle ON the PMI item at the bottom of the list.  If you can toggle it ON and the PMI toolbar is displayed as well as the PMI item is added to the menu bar at the top of the NX window, you're in.

Now go to...

PMI-> Security Marking -> Company Proprietary Information...

...where you can add whatever comments or information that you would like the user to see as he's opening the part file, in the form of a notice, which they user must acknowledge before he will actually be able to see the part file.  Note that you ONLY need the PMI module to create the notice.  The system opening the file and seeing the notice does NOT need to have a PMI license, the user will still see the message.

Anyway, take a look and see is perhaps you're in a position to leverage this PMI enabled capability for your need.

RE: Pop-Up Note on Open

John,

your instructions don't seem to work as written I seem to only get the option to place an uneditable company propriety info note on the view.  Am I missing something?

RE: Pop-Up Note on Open

(OP)
What about Insert> Note?

The note rotates with the part. Is there a way to keep note upright and centered in the window?

RE: Pop-Up Note on Open

jnikolauk Yes, that's the way the PMI 'Security Markings' work.  It's not an ideal solution, but it might address the needs of some companies.

And if I don't have the PMI option?

RE: Pop-Up Note on Open

If you go back to my first reply in this thread, you will see that I did offer a albeit low-tech, cheap & dirty solution which some people have used for years.

I guess it is what it is.

As you know, I've been a SolidWorks user for years. Basic lic gives me the option without a work-around. Yes, I know NX can do so much more than SW but why the work-arounds or upgrades in lic to get something that should be in the entry level NX?

John, I do appreciate the time you put into answering everyone's questions. I'm not trying to tick you off but maybe ask NX to tweak some of the basic functions/ options.

Thanks again

RE: Pop-Up Note on Open

As I also stated, we ARE including PMI with many of the bundled configurations which we've been selling for years.

RE: Pop-Up Note on Open

John (or others),

do you happen to have some screenshots of "PMI based notes" attached to a NX partfile? We (ASML) are discussing some options to acknowledge designers the do's & dont's when re-using NX part files of catalogue parts (not to be used for new designs etc.).

We are in the transition to NX7.5, and PMI is not installed yet.

Thanks,

The NX Help files covering PMI offers a limited number of images and example as well.
