Training Wall Design

Training Wall Design

(OP)
I have a question about the stability analysis of training walls for dams.

Does anyone know what the Corps of Engineers requires for safety factors for training wall design?

In Retaining and Flood Walls (EM 1110-2-2502), the Corps requires a maximum safety factor of 1.5.  In Structural Design of Concrete Lined Flood Control Channels (EM 1110-2-2007) the Corps references the Retaining Wall and Flood Wall document.

I haven't come across anything where the Corps specifically mentions requirements for training walls. Based on the above 2 references it seems that a safety factor of 1.5 could be used.

RE: Training Wall Design

Never heard the term before.

Is this a wall used to "train" the outflow from a discharge gate either to a path other than the water would normally take, or to confine the flow to a certain route?

this is a wall to train the flow in a reservoir towards the spillway and to prevent lateral flow along the axis of the dam from flowing into the spillway. More commonly used for earth dams. the floodwall manual should be used. you may also want to look at the following manual which goes into quite a bit of detail on loading conditions and required FS for all structures:
EM 1110-2-2100 STABILITY ANALYSIS OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES

And here I was thinking of one of those walls that they climb up and over during boot camp!

cvg, thanks for the reference, it has exactly the information I was looking for.

When you mention the flood wall manual are you refering to EM 1110-2-2502 Retaining and Flood Walls?

RE: Training Wall Design

yes
